Welcome to the Speir Family Genealogy website. Visit the Speir Family Bible page for how this website began in Wayne County, Michigan, USA. We welcome any input on the surnames Speir, Speirs, Spier, Spiers and Spear.
The picture above is of the Spier School in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland in the 1890's from the School's Wikipedia site by Roger Griffith. Roger is a Countryside Ranger - based at Eglinton Country Park in Irvine.
So far, we have traced our family to James Speir and Janet Mason from Ayrshire, Scotland. James Speir was born around 1781. Select the Family Tree link to see more information supplied by Janet Akaha of California, USA.
Please be sure to sign our guest book. Send email to webmaster@speirfamily.org with comments and suggestions to improve this site or add to our research.
What's New
12/16/2011 Merry
Christmas from Rick Speir. Rick found this letter from Santa
to his dad. Rick described it best: "Note the date on the
envelope, just below the stamp, and what it cost to mail a
first-class letter back then. No doubt, 6-year old Dickie
Speir was very excited to receive this, probably not
realizing, or caring about it being a crass advertisement for
a department store!"

Does anyone remember the Newcomb-Endicott department store on
Woodward Avenue in Detroit?

It was a wonderful find and I'm very happy to add it to our
photo album.
10/01/2011 A lard
can uncovered a treasure trove of pictures! My cousins
Rosemary and Suzanne, carefully labeled and mailed the
pictures to me. It was an early Christmas! These
are in the photo album and a sneak peak of a few here:

This is a picture of Agnes
Carmichael Speir, married to William Reid Speir. This is
what we know about her from her death certificate and
duplicated here.
- Name: Agnis Speir
- Married at age 23, parent of 7 children, 6 are still living
- Birth: Scotland
- December 17, 1823
- Mother: Marry Smith, Scotland
- Father: Archy Carmichal, Scotland
- Date of death: February 28, 1900
- Age: 76
- Disease Causing Death: Paralysis
- Contributary Causes: Enormous Dilation of heart
- Signed by: Jessie Neely (her daughter)
- Buried: Elm Lawn Cemetery, Bay City, MI Note: I visited this cemetery and did not find the gravesite. It's a lovely, quiet and well-kept cemetery, next door to St. Patrick's Cemetery where other family members are buried. I may take another trip out there if I can get more specific information.

This is a picture of William Reid Speir/Spear, husband of
Agnis/Agnes Carmichael Speir. The picture was labeled
William T. which I believe to be incorrect since we have
William's information on his death certificate. If I am
wrong or off a generation, please correct me! What we
know about William Speir from the death certificate and
census:
-
William Reid Speir was married to Agnis Carmichael. Another
puzzling item on his death certificate is that it lists his
father as William. Our research shows that William Reid
Speir's father is James Speir, married to Jean Mason. See the
pedigree page for a quick view of this. William Speir was the
father of James Speir.
- Name: William R. Spear
- Widower, married at 24, father of 10 children, 6 are living
- Birth: November 15, 1820, Scotland
- Date of death: January 20, 1908
- Age: 87
- Father: Wm. Spear, Scotland (we believe his father's name was James)
- Disease Causing Death: Asthma (I think)
- Occupation: Engineer
- Signed by: Mrs. Bennett, Rochester, MI
- Burial: Bay City, MI
09/30/2011 After my visit with Layne, I scanned
everything to make digital copies in order to preserve these
photographs forever. I immediately added these to the
photo album but have been 'slacking-off' in my webmaster
duties and did not get a chance to write about this wonderful
find. Layne and her mother, Joyce, visited the Speir
school several years ago. It was just after it was
demolished but, with greatest hospitality, a Scotsman was
their tour guide and host. She relayed a trip of a
lifetime.
One of the pictures in my cousin Layne's collection is of Charlotte Crossey Speir. What we know about Charlotte Crossey Speir: She was the wife of James T. Speir. She was born on 7/17/1853 and died 5/10/1893 in Bay City, Michigan. She was born in Norville, Ontario, Canada. Charlotte was nicknamed "Lottie" in the family bible. She died young at the age of 39. She had six children who were:

Part of the trip in Scotland included some genealogy
research. They were able to see the Speir seal and
tartan which was combined with the "Boyd" name. Here are
the pictues:

09/28/2011 As I mentioned in April, I received many wonderful pictures from my cousin, Layne. Among the pictures is a picture of a grocery store that is called W. J. Speir (William James Speir). The address is clearly 1522. It is believed to be on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, MI. I do not know the date of the picture but know that William James Speir lived from 1874-1938. There is a rich history online about Woodward Avenue. I would like to devote a page to that in the future and elicit help from everyone on dating the picture and finding more about the store.

The view of the inside of the W.J Speir store:

04/17/2011 Another picture has been added to our photo album. This was sent to me by my cousin, Jack, several months ago. The picture is of Edward "Ted" Speir and his wife, Jessie Gagner Speir. They were the parents of Frances Speir Mays.

Many new pictures will soon be added to the photo album. I met with my cousin, Layne, and was thrilled to see the original bible, documents and pictures. I can assure you, the bible is in good hands with Layne and carefully protected in an acid-free box. I'm not sure our photo album does the pictures justice and may be changing the format in the future. In the meantime, I changed the format of the death certificates page and will be trying different ways to make navigation and viewing easier. As always, I welcome your feedback, corrections and/or suggestions by sending email to webmaster@speirfamily.org
02/21/2011 Thanks to my cousins, there are many new pictures and details under the tombstones page. The picture of James T. Speir's stone is almost illegible. I posted the original but have copies of others that I adjusted to improve the text. I have been unsuccessful in improving the quality and would appreciate suggestions. I still have pictures to scan and will continue to update the site with my progress.
I have sad news that Rick's dad died. Richard O. Speir died on January 24, 2011 at the age of 90 years, 7 months. I will post pictures and other details soon. Rick talked about his father often and passed on several interesting stories that his father recalled about the Speir's.
While researching the Speir name, I was also sad to see that Bobbie Speir Jarvinen died June 8, 2010. Bobbie and I were introduced through her brother in Alaska who signed the guest book when this site was first opened. Bobbie had extensive research on the Speir's who settled in the Southern States of the U.S. but she lived in Michigan. You can read more at this site: Bobbie Louise Speir Jarvinen
Since the last update, several people signed the guest book and included details of their relatives. Please drop them a note if you can help them in their research.
The site was not intended to be a blog but I keep wondering how to keep up with the questions off-line in email and let everyone respond to the guest book entries. I may start a Facebook page as the Speir Family. If you think it is a good or bad idea, please let me know.
06/27/2010 It has been quiet in the Speir family. I have been thoroughly enjoying Roger Griffith’s articles at s1beith.com.
http://www.s1beith.com/memories/the-cuff-the-gibsons-and-a-marriage-stone.html
http://www.s1beith.com/memories/spiers-parklands-and-the-cholera-pit.html
Have you ever wondered how you are related to someone? For example, I am related to Rick Speir because we share a common ancestor William Reid Speir. Looking at the Pedigree page, William Reid Speir is Rick’s great, great grandfather and he is my great, great, great-grandfather.
From the attached chart, that would make Rick my 3rd cousin, once removed.
http://genealogy.about.com/library/nrelationshipchart.htm
It’s a little tricky to figure out. The instructions are at the bottom of the chart.
I have nothing new for Ulrich since I have not heard back from Neely Funeral Home.
05/01/2010 Ullrich
from Germany asked about Sgt. Robert J. Speir who lost his
life in WWII. The guest book entry is:
We know that Agnis Carmichael Speir and William Reid Speir had
children:

I will post what I find but may need help on this search. Robert Speir's mother is Pearl Helen Carney. This is information gleaned from our family tree. The Carney family has years of research and an active forum. I expect another piece of a puzzle will soon be solved.
04/30/2010 This website just celebrated its' one year anniversary and I found that I had an error on the Family Bible Page that my cousin, Rosemary, caught. On that page, Jack was corrected by his sister, Suzanne about the occasion of the bible. Rosemary is Jack and Suzanne's sister. What no-one noticed until now is that the correction had an error. Rose was not born to James and Lottie (Charlotte) Speir. Rose was a Hebert, married to William James Speir.
That was an easy mistake to make since we all knew Grandma Rose and were amazed at her energy and longevity. She lived alone in Wyandotte, Michigan until she broke a hip clearing the snow off her porch. It was easy to picture her shoveling the snow at 96. It didn't take much coaxing to get Grandma Rose to demonstrate the Can-Can, legs flying upward and cigarette dangling from her lips. She spoke French and drilled us on our numbers, not quite satisfied that we were getting it right. Grandma Rose died just before her 100th birthday in 1974.
I never met my grandfather, William James Speir Sr. who died before I was born. I hope relatives who do remember him will chime-in so I can add the story to my collection of the Speir family stories that I plan to post at a future date.
04/09/2010 I scanned in a new picture of William James Speir Jr. (Uncle Billy) and George Thomas Speir, my father. View it here and in the photo album.

4/08/2010 Thank you
for the new guest book entries from Carlin Jill, granddaughter
of Charles Speir and also James P. Speir. We would
appreciate any additional information about our family to add
to our tree. From
corresponding with many Speir's, I'm finding that the Speir
humor is a trait that comes across even in email. So,
from us Yankee Speir's to our family down South, here is a big
welcome! Or, should I say, "Welcome Y'all"!
03/22/2010 Roger
Griffith sent correspondence about the successful regeneration
of the Spier School site.
"See the Spier's and Beith Wikipedia websites for the 'Spier's
School 1887' Commemorative Wall that has just been erected at
Spier's, using original carved stones returned from Garnock
Academy in Kilbirnie. We hope that this will mark a
significant beginning to the regeneration of the site."

Thank you Charles.

02/05/2010 The
'Friends of Spiers School' (FoS) has just been established in
Beith. Roger
Griffith has an article on S1Beith.com about the first meeting
of FoS and explains, "FoS will encourage other groups to
become involved at Spier's through membership, carrying out
conservation projects; biodiversity enhancement initiatives;
photographic and other surveys; as well as arranging events
and furthering the educational and ecotherapeutic uses of
Spier's woodlands and open spaces." For the full
article, see: http://www.s1beith.com/news/friends-of-spiers-group-established.html

01/27/2010 Don't forget the second round of
voting for Spier School! Beith news has the latest
article about voting here: http://www.s1beith.com/news/bovrils-great-outdoors-revival---spiers-still-needs-votes.html
You can also subscribe to the latest happenings around Beith,

01/26/2010 George Speer, the admin to the Spears DNA Project has update the y-Results site with Rick's results. Follow this link http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/spears/results and look for kit # 158396. Rick will update the information about 'Earliest Known Ancestor' since we can go back much further in the pedigree with James Spier b. ca 1787 (probably) Beith, Ayrshire.
George Speer has been corresponding with us and sent
fascinating information from a book, 'The Spiers Family of
Ayr'. I will post the documents or details
soon.
Janet has been updating our tree and filling in the blanks.
Her correspondence with a library in Scotland provided the
name of Robert's father. She has already put the
information provided in the book above into a GEDCOM tree
format.
01/24/2010 Bovril's
Great
Outdoors revival competition is in the second round of voting
and Spier's Old School Grounds is one of the top 100.
You can cast your vote until February 28, 2010 at the Bovril UK
site. Follow the 'Great Outdoors Revival' signpost and
VOTE at the section with that name. The project is called
'Spier's Old School Grounds' and its Code is SLOT000207.
The website is clever with great graphics and sounds. In case
you were wondering, what is Bovril? It's a beef broth
drink.
Roger has forwarded information I'll post for those Speir's
who may need the details for their family research. Our
own tree should be updated but I'm still finding my way around
the GEDCOM formats and reports. With the yDNA results,
we have a connection to our Southern Speir/Speer/Spear
families and (surprise) the Chandler and other names.

10/11/2009 Our cousin, Rosemary, mentioned that she sent me James Speir's death certificate. It was filed with the Hebert family notes. I added James Speir and Rose Hebert Speir's death certificates to our death certificate page.
I've been corresponding with two people from "findagrave" who had information about Jessie Mae (Speir) Neely. There was a discrepancy on one of the sites but most of the information is correct. I found our hand-written notes while searching for James' death certificate. Here is a puzzle for you. Jessie Mae Speir-Neely was James Speir's sister. She was the daughter of William and Agnis Carmichael Speir and signed Agnis' death certificate. In our bible, James married Mary Tobin Neely after Charlotte Crossey died. Did James marry Jessie's sister-in-law? We do not know much about Mary Tobin Neely even though the Neely family were prominent mill owners in Bay City, MI. She would have raised some of James and Charlotte's children since they were still young and Charlotte died at 39. It would be nice to find out if they had children. Another mystery to solve.
10/04/2009 We asked Roger Griffith what he could find for us out at Auld Kirk in Beith. We were looking at John Spier's memorial from Roger's Wiki site on Beith and trying to decipher the text which was difficult to read. We also hoped to get new dates from other family members who are interred at Auld Kirk. We are very fortunate that Roger can access this restricted site since he works for North Ayrshire Council Ranger Service and the Council holds the keys.Roger did take the trip to the site and took some wonderful pictures. Margaret Gibson Spier's six boys and four girls who are mentioned on the inscription, are actually the angel figures on the memorial where she is kneeling besides John on his death bed. When you inspect the picture closer at Roger's Beith Wiki site, that makes it rather sad.
John died in Largs at age 28. Robert, her husband, died in 1850 at age 74. The memorial to her husband and children is dated 1870. Roger mentioned that the central memorial is very expensive, high-quality black marble with wonderful carvings. The pictures are very nice and posted at Roger's site. Special thanks to Roger for continually adding to our Speir family research.
10/03/2009 As you can probably see, there are many changes to the website formatting. If I've introduced typos or other problems, please let me know. Look around the new pages and tell me what you think.
The Tombstones page allows you to see the individual pictures by putting your cursor over the thumbnail image. Depending on your browser, you may need to set viewing to full size. It's jumpy on Firefox browser. If this view is too annoying, let me know.
I'd like to hear your opinion if the death certificate of William R. Spear is "our" great grandfather, William Reid Speir. I'm not so worried that the spelling is "Spear" since he is shown on the census with many different spellings. The one inconsistency is that it says his father's name is Wm. We researched his father to be James and this is confirmed by Ayrshire OPR records. You can zoom into these pages by selecting the thumbnail. Select the Back arrow on your browser to return to the main page.
Our cousin, Suzette, posed a question in the Guest Book about adding pictures of living relatives. I would be happy to add any pictures to the site as long as the person does not object. For privacy purposes, I may omit some details about the living. Rick also mentioned that he has pictures of living ancestors. Please email them to me at either my personal email or webmaster@speirfamily.org.
Janet, our Speir genealogist, has explained Scottish naming convention. As you can see on the pedigree page, our family did follow this convention. There are deviations but, looking at OPR records, some children's names repeat. We know that out of 10 children for William and Agnes, they outlived all but 6. The convention is to name the:
- first son for the father
- first daughter for the mother's mother
- second son for the mother's father
- second daughter for the father's mother
I have finally purchased Family Tree Maker and will ingest Janet's tree to my own and post an update to our Tree page. This may take me a while but will be worth it. Janet has found several new pieces to our puzzle since we received the DNA results.
Rick has shared the results of the yDNA tests and I still don't quite understand it! For those of us whose great-grandfather is James Speir of the family bible, Rick is our third cousin. He shares our great-great-grandfather, William Reid Speir. James Speir and his great-grandfather, Robert, were brothers. I have posted a very rough page for yDNA but hope to update it often. The interesting news is that we know we are in Haplogroup I2b1 and most of the Speir's we match have the spelling SPEER/SPEAR.
A quick overview of the Pedigree page from Janet A. is repeated below. That bone is for you, Rick.
- We seem to be the first Speir(s) who lived in Scotland AFTER 1700 to have done DNA.
- We did have some very good matches and they all shared some variation of our surname. We all have been assigned to the haplotype I2b1. These Speir appear to have lived in Scotland around 1600 and then moved to Ireland. Most of them now use the SPEER/SPEER spellings.
- The SPEER researchers in this project have evidence that suggests that their line can be traced back to a nobleman by the name of Milius Speire or Spär (born around 1350 and of the Orkney Islands). Malius married Eupheimia whose lineage can be directly traced back to BOTH the King of Norway and the King of Scotland.
- As all Speir(s) members of our project seem to fall into two main types, I strongly feel that we are going to find that ALL of the Speir(s) of the Ayrshire and Renfrewshire are related. The only question will be how far back we have to go to find that connection. A 37 marker test can't tell you the exact way that you are related, but it can give you a pretty good idea of the time period where you share a common ancestor. Take a look at the project at the link below, and see for yourself!
9/13/2009 Preliminary results of the Speir DNA test results are in and I will post updates when the results are complete.
Janet Akaha has been working on the Speir family tree for many years and has gone through volumes of information to update our tree. Once I find a decent way to display the information and Janet agrees, I will update the "tree" page of our site.

I have received email from Speirs around the world to include Mariann Evison from Norway.
She lives near Bodø which is just past the Artic Circle. She is researching her ancestor, Margaret Speir who was born at Darly, Ayrshire 7. June 1835. She was the daughter of John Speir and Jean Rodger. Janet Akaha was able to provide additional information.

8/10/2009 If you follow the updates in the Guest Book (no, not the spam), Sarah Wilkinson was looking for her father, Malcolm David Speirs. She was adopted in 1963 and knows that her mother and father were young students when their circumstances forced them to put her up for adoption. She has been raised by a wonderful family and still lives in the United Kingdom.
I'm happy to say that Sarah found her mother and some of her mother's family. As she says, they "got on like a house on fire." Sarah and I traded email and links back and forth and eventually the sleuthing paid off. She will meet her mother and uncle in Canada.
We found an obituary for Malcolm David Speirs and many details point that this may be her father. We cannot confirm that though. So far, our leads to the Speirs have come up to more puzzle pieces. If anyone knows more, please send email to myself, webmaster@speirfamily.org or Sarah's email in the Guest Book.
7/1/2009 We have a male Speir DNA donor. Thank you Richard! It will be exciting to find out which Haplogroup the Speir family is in. The test will give all of us so much interesting information and we have made that leap into genetic genealogy. What all this means is new to me and I have my reading cut out for me from the sites below. Thank you Janet for pursuing this. I will continue posting updates and hope to have a page dedicated to this topic.
6/28/2009 From Janet Akaha: "FamilyTreeDNA has a special going on the Y-DNA 37 marker + mtDNA test until June 30th. It is $119 now and then will return to its normal price of $248. The donor for the Speir/Speirs/Spier/Spiers line HAS to be a direct male offspring. The y chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from father to son to son to son to son, etc. So your father and my grandfather's Y-DNA would be identical. The mtDNA is passed from mother to daughter to daughter to daughter."
